Don't Remodel Yet

By Travis Wright, REALTOR®, with eXp Realty

Before you spend money getting ready to sell, watch this. (Buyers, there's a tip for you too.)

The quick tip
  • Fix what's broken, like leaks and anything an inspector would flag.

  • Freshen what's tired, like paint, lighting, and landscaping. Skip big remodels until we've talked them through, and always disclose known problems.

  • Buyers: after the inspection, ask for repairs on real issues, not cosmetic stuff. Nobody wins a negotiation over a doorknob.

Don't remodel your house right before you sell it. You might be paying for someone else's taste.

Travis Wright here, with eXp Realty. Getting ready to sell, a lot of people want to redo the kitchen or the bathroom. Sometimes that pays off. But often buyers would rather pick their own finishes.

Buying? Flip it around. After the inspection, focus your repair requests on real issues, not cosmetic stuff. Nobody wins a negotiation over a doorknob.
